The road has been squeezed for ongoing Bus Rapid Transit project

Traffic movement has been interrupted on 12km of Dhaka-Mymensingh highway due to waterlogging by rain.

Around 27 buses travel to the western regions of Bangladesh from Dhaka across this 12km road between Tongi and Joydebpur intersections.

The road has been reduced to two lanes from four due to the ongoing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Though authorities have halted the project for smooth movement during Eid, rain has waterlogged the road.

People travelling back home for Eid have been facing traffic from early Monday.

Moreover, 4km of this 12km road, near Board Bazar area, do not have any drainage system.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan police Thoai Ong Prue Marma said: "Traffic movement will be smooth again as soon as the water is removed.”

"Steps are being taken to resolve this congestion,” he said.

A meeting was held on May 24 by Gazipur City Corporation, Road and Highway officials, police, transport association and BRT stakeholders regarding the potential woes of this road.

On that meeting, Advocate Jahangir Alam, the city mayor, said: "The BRT project started back in 2017 with several crores of investment, and not even 1km of the work has been done in the past two years.”

"We are losing hope and request the BRT official to complete the project as soon as possible,” he said.

Planning Director of BRT project, Sanaul Haque said: "20% of the work has been completed this year. Two parts of this project are done foreign organizations and they are unaware of the weather here."

"Building drains did not help, as the water got transferred to households and factories. We have appointed people to clean off water from the road," the planning director added.

Assistant Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan police Nazrul Islam said; "Other than this 12km, the rest of Gazipur highway allows smooth movement of traffic.”

"To keep the roads clear, 200 members of Armed Police Battalion (APBN) have been appointed."
