3 remanded over Rifat murder

Rifat was hacked to death in front of his wife in Barguna on Wednesday

A Barguna court has granted separate remands for three accused in a case filed over the murder of Rifat Sharif, who was hacked to death in front of his wife in Barguna on Wednesday.

Barguna Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Russell passed the order on Friday after police produced the trio before it seeking 10-day remand for each of them.

Confirming the matter, Inspector Humayun Kabir, also the investigation officer of the case, said murder accused Chanda and Hasan have been put on a seven-day remand each, while another suspect Nazmul Hasan was put on three-day remand.

Chandan and Hasan were named as the fourth and ninth accused respectively in the case filed over the murder.

Dulal Sharif, father of the victim Rifat Sharif, 22, filed a case against 12 people on Thursday.

In the case statements, Sabbir Hossain has been named as the main accused, and mastermind of the incident.

According to witnesses, three people hacked Rifat with sharp weapons near the main gate of Barguna College on Wednesday morning, right in front of his wife Ayesha Akter Minni, and other onlookers, leaving him critically injured.

Although he was rushed to Barguna General Hospital, and later moved to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, the duty doctors declared him dead around 4pm.

The entire incident was captured in a video that went viral on social media platforms. It showed the miscreants indiscriminately hacking at Rifat, while his wife was trying to save him.
