A suspected yaba dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
The incident took place on the bank of Naf River, behind Nayapara Girls’ Madrasa in the upazila, around 4am yesterday, said Teknaf police OC Pradip Kumar Das.
He identified the deceased as Mufid Alam, 39, of Nayapara — a known yaba dealer in the area, who was accused in six narcotics cases.
OC Pradip said they also recovered 5,000 yaba pills, two guns, and 10 bullets from the scene after the “gunfight,” which, he added, left three policemen injured.
OC Pradip said, a Teknaf police team detained Mufid from Nayapara Bazar late on Saturday night. Later, based on the information he provided during interrogation, police took Mufid along to bust a big yaba consignment behind the madrasa.
“Mufid’s cohorts ambushed the police team there, which led to the gunfight. They, however, fled the scene at one point,” the police official said.
Mufid, with bullet wounds, was rescued, and rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, OC Pradip said. Doctors there then referred him to the 250-Bed District Sadar Hospital, Cox's Bazar, but he was declared dead on arrival there.
Mufid’s body was kept at the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.
The three injured policemen were also admitted to the upazila health complex.
Between January 1 and July 14, a total of 69 people were killed in Cox’s Bazar district in reported gunfights with either police, Rapid Action Battalion, or Border Guard Bangladesh.
Most of these incidents between the suspected criminals, and the law enforcement agencies took place in Teknaf upazila.
