Suspected drug trader killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

Four police officers were also injured in the incident

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight among two groups of drug traders and police in Kushtia.

The incident took place in Harra area of Kushtia Sadar Upazila around 1am on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Rafikul Islam, 40, of the same upazila. He was wanted in seven cases, including drugs and arms, Kushtia model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nasir Uddin, said.

Four police officers were also injured in the incident.

The OC said a team of police reached the spot around 1am, upon information that two gangs of drug dealers were engaging in a gunfight.

However, understanding police presence, the drug traders opened fire at them, forcing the police to strike back. 

Later, the gangs retreated and managed to escape, leaving an injured Rafikul behind.

The OC said police took him to Kushtia General Hospital, where the duty doctors declared him dead.

Law enforcement also found a pistol, two bullets, and 380 yaba pills from the spot, he added.
