A part of protective embankment in Chandpur collapsed due to strong current and rising water in the Meghna River Dhaka Tribune

The local administration has disconnected gas and power connections to the affected area

At least five households washed away in Chandpur’s Puranbazar Harisabha area on Saturday night, triggering fears of massive erosion, after a vulnerable part of the town protective embankment collapsed due to strong current and rising water in the Meghna River.

Four temples and a street are now vulnerable to erosion in the area. Many are dismantling their houses and moving away from the river bank.

The local administration has also disconnected gas and power connections to the affected area.

Since Saturday night, the embankment has also developed a number of cracks in it, threatening to devour Harisabha, Madhya Sreeramdi and Pashchim Sreeramdi areas.

The Water Development Board (WDB) dumped 500 sandbags on Saturday night to stop further erosion. Additional District Magistrate Mohammad Abdullah Al Mahmud Zaman said the victims of erosion had been evacuated from the site.

The area was last hit by erosion nearly two years ago. The WDB has been using concrete cement blocks to protect the town.

Locals, who fear that a major portion of the Puranbazar Harisabha area will be devoured by the river, have urged the government to take swift, effective and permanent protective measures.

Chandpur WDB’s Deputy Assistant Engineer Md Ashraf said the latest erosion was caused by strong current. “We’re using sandbags at the vulnerable spots,” he said. “We have many more bags in stock and will use them right away.”

The same office’s Executive Engineer Abu Raihan said they had used 53,000 sandbags in the same area of the embankment in April. “The erosion has struck again even after that.”

The same part of the embankment had been damaged and the Chandpur area flooded a number of times in the last several years.
