Survey: Discarded tires prime breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes

The Monsoon Aedes Survey 2019 was conducted at 100 sites including homesteads of 98 wards in the two Dhaka city corporations

Old discarded tires in the capital are the primary breeding ground for the Aedes mosquito, according to a recent government survey. 

The Aedes mosquito is the dengue virus carrier wreaking havoc across the country. A number of 27,437 people have been infected by dengue so far, till August 5,  2019. 

The Monsoon Aedes Survey 2019 was conducted at 100 sites including homesteads of 98 wards in the two Dhaka city corporations.

The Communicable Disease Control (CDC) unit of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) carried out the survey and found different types of containers holding stagnant water responsible behind the proliferation of Aedes mosquitoes.

Among the containers, 22.90% were tires where larvae of Aedes mosquito were found in a large number, MM Akhtaruzzaman, manager of the DGHS' malaria and dengue program, said on Monday.

Of the sources, some 11.29% were flooded floors (basement or otherwise) and stood second as the breeding grounds. 

Among other Aedes breeding sources, 7.74% were plastic drums (sealable), 4.84% both water tanks and plastic buckets, 3.87% were clay pots, flower tub and trays, 3.55% paint containers tin/plastic, 3.23% tin/metal cans, and 2.90% were plastic mugs or ewers, according to the survey.
