Ruet students missing at sea: One found, one still missing

Another Ruet student- Ariful Islam, 21 – is still missing

The body of a Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) student who went missing at sea has been found.

The body of Mohammad Rafiq, 21, was recovered by emergency services around 4:30pm yesterday, said Cox’s Bazar District Commissioner’s Office Magistrate Makhon Chandra Sutra Dhar.  

Another Ruet student- Ariful Islam, 21 – is still missing. Both the students are from Cox’s Bazar town and had returned there from Rajshahi for the Eid holidays.

Earlier, the two students had gone missing after they went swimming at a beach in Cox's Bazar. 

Md Zillur Rahman, superintendent of police (SP) of Tourist police in Cox's Bazar zone, said: "A group of 8 to 10 friends, including the duo, came to the beach of Balirchar at Laboni Point on Saturday morning and played football.

"Later, they went to swim in the sea, and five of them were dragged away by the tides around 11:30am," he said.

"On being informed, Tourist police and local lifeguards rescued Ahmed, 21, Imrul Shahed, 21, and Mobashsherul Islam, 21, from the sea and took them to a local hospital."

A rescue operation was underway for the missing students, the SP added.
