Another child dies of dengue

Total 788 more dengue patients hospitalized between Wednesday and yesterday morning

A five-year-old child died in Khulna on Thursday after suffering from dengue for several days, taking the unofficial nationwide death toll from the disease towards 140 by another notch.

However, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), so far only 57 dengue patients have died across Bangladesh between January 1 and September 5.

But the current unofficial death toll reportedly stands at 137.

The child, who died at Khulna Medical College Hospital around 2:30pm yesterday, was identified as Srabonti, according to the hospital’s Resident Physician Dr Shoilendra Nath Bishwas.

He said the five-year-old, whose family was from Jessore, was admitted to the hospital on August 31 with dengue.

Meanwhile, between 8am Wednesday and 8am Thursday, a total of 788 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across Bangladesh.

Among them, 331 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and 457 in other districts.

The DGHS in a statement said 3,371 dengue patients were currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals around the country until Thursday morning.

Between January 1 and September 5, a total of 74,753 people have been affected by dengue, according to DGHS.

Of those, 70,790 have been released from hospitals and clinics after treatment.
