The situation is normal now and under our control, says Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman
At least seven activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League party, have been injured in a factional clash at Rajshahi University.
The injured, Amit Hasan Limon, Maruf, Sohel, Rashid, Riyan, Rony, and Jasim, are supporters of Sakibul Hasan Baki, a former leader of Chhatra League's Central Committee.
Witnesses said Chhatra League activist Kamrul and his friend were conversing in the guest room of Madar Bux Hall around 12:30pm on Friday, when Limon entered with his female friends and asked Kamrul, a supporter of university Chhatra League unit General Secretary Foysal Ahmed Runu, to leave the guest room.
An argument erupted between them and Kamrul and his friends assaulted Limon.
When Limon told Sakibul Hasan Baki about the incident, around 50 of his supporters went to Kamrul's room in the hall and vandalized it.
In reprisal 200 activists of the incumbent Chhatra League committee took up position in front of the hall and attacked Baki’s supporters.
The proctorial body of the university, the police, and president and general secretary of Chhatra League, later brought the situation under control.
Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman said Chhatra League activists had engaged in a conflict over sitting in the guest room.
"The situation is normal now and under our control," he added.
