Man held for attempting to rape RU student

Police arrested a man for attempting to rape a Rajshahi University (RU) student yesterday in Dharampur, Rajshahi University.

Shamol Banik, 40, brother of RU teacher Bithika Banik, forced himself on the student. When the girl screamed out, Shamol fled and  she was rescued from the house by the police.

Bithika Banik, teacher of Department of Sanskrit at RU and provost of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, said: "I left the house to attend to a hall emergency and had no idea about the incident until the next morning.

"I demand a proper investigation and if my brother is guilty, justice should be ensured," she added.

Motihar police station OC Hafizur Rahman confirmed the incident.

Five men arrested for rape, sexual harassment in four districts

Police arrested five men for sexually harassing and raping three children and a woman in four districts yesterday and on Tuesday.

In Keraniganj, Rapid Action Battalion-11 (RAB) arrested Liton Miah, 45,  yesterday from Kadamtali, Keraniganj, accused of raping a ten year old in Narayanganj.

RAB-11Media Officer,  Major Talukdar Najmus Sakib said, Liton lured the girl to his house and raped her on Sunday.

He said: "Liton confessed to his crimes in primary investigation."

In Laxmipur, police arrested two men, Rajon and Faruque, from Laxmipur Sadar Hospital, for attempting to rape a garments worker on Tuesday. 

Sources said, the two lured the woman to the hospital  roof and attempted to rape her on Monday. She managed to save herself and informed the police.

Laxmipur Sadar police station OC AKM Azizur Rahman Miah said: "We are investigating the matter with the utmost priority."

In Bagerhat, police arrested rickshaw van driver Riazul Hawladar, 25, for attempting to rape a four year old girl in Gabtola village of Morrelganj upazila on Tuesday.

Sources said, Riazul lured the child to a fish farm enclosure and attempted to rape her.  Morrelganj police station OC Thakur Das Mandal confirmed the incident.

In Jhalokati, the Department of Women Affairs (DWA) on Tuesday handed over a man to police for reportedly violating his own daughter.

The arrested man was identified as Babul Fakir of Sholposhena village in Sadar upazila.
