BINA-19 is cost efficient because it requires less irrigation and fertilizer to grow

Cultivators have achieved a robust output after growing a climate friendly high-yielding paddy variety BINA Dhan-19 during test cultivation in five districts of Bangladesh.

The Aus paddy variety, invented in Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) in Gopalganj, is heat tolerant and requires low cost compared to other varieties. Some 3.84 to 5 metric tons of BINA Dhan-19 can be produced from only a hectare of land.

In Gopalganj, farmers were able to produce 4.90 metric tons of paddy from a hectare of land, said researchers and officials of BINA after the trial farming.

BINA-19 is cost efficient because it requires less irrigation and fertilizer to grow. The tasty rice also has an attractive essence.

BINA Gopalganj office said farmers in Gopalganj, Rajbari, Shariatpur, Madaripur and Faridpur districts, cultivated the paddy in 120 test plots spanning 120 acres of land in the current Aus season and achieved a remarkable harvest.

Humayun Khandaker, a farmer of Paschim Majhigati village in Kashiani upazila, said: "BINA office provided me seeds, fertilizers and pesticides free of cost. It took very low irrigation compared to traditional Aus paddy and resulted in bumper production. We are hoping to get a good price with low cost this year. "

Another farmer Rezaul Khandaker of the same village, said: "I am so happy to see the production of this variety. I am planning to cultivate the paddy next."

Md Shefaur Rahman, scientific officer of Gopalganj BINA office, said: "Tackling the effect of climate change is the biggest challenge for us and that is why our scientists are inventing new varieties of crops.

“Besides, we are conducting experiments with these varieties to see the production in the field. Since BINA Dhan-19 variety fetched bumper production, I am urging all to spread the seeds among farmers," he added.

Agriculture scientist Md Abul Kalam Azad, inventor of BINA-19, said: "We have to stop wasting water during paddy cultivation. This short life spanning variety is environment friendly. It will endure the effects of climate change by requiring less irrigation and tolerating heat. As a result, farmers will attain robust yield."
