Expelled Dhaka South unit Jubo League president Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat had been absconding inside a Jamaat-e-Islami leader's house in Comilla for days before apprehension.

They were staying in a room located on the first floor of the one-storey building owned by the Jamaat leader, Monir Chowdhury, in the Kunju Sripur village of the Chauddagram upazila.

Kunju Sripur is situated near Bangladesh-India border.

Alkora Union Parishad Chairman Golam Faruk Helal said Monir Chowdhury is involved in Jamaat politics.

"On Sunday morning, I came to know that Samrat was hiding in his house," he said.

“Samrat along with his accomplice Arman stayed in the room which was locked from outside most of the time,” Monir's sister-in-law Nur Nahar and her daughter Samia Jannat Chowdhury said.

“They used to sit beside the bank of a pond located inside the house in the evening and did not come to face anyone,” they added.

Samia and her mother live in a tin-shed adjacent to the building inside the house compound.

They said Monir lives in Feni while his family stays in Dhaka.

“Monir's younger sister and her husband stayed in another room of the building. They took care of Monir's differently-abled mother,” Samia added.

"Monir and his brother-in-law Haji Alauddin started to visit the house frequently after Samrat took shelter there," Samia and her mother continued.

"Initially, we could not identify the duo. We came to know the matter soon after their detention."

Samia said the RAB apprehended the two when Monir Chowdhury and Alauddin, an Awami League leader, were also present.

Sources said Alauddin, also the mayor of Feni Sadar Municipality, is one of Samrat’s business associates.

Abdul Kuddus, a resident of Kunju Sripur, said Monir Chowdhury was a former leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir and then was politically aligned with Jamaat-e-Islami.

“Monir is married to the sister of Feni's local Awami League leader Alauddin,” he said.

Monir lives in Feni and runs his business there, Kuddus added.

Locals said a large number of Rapid Action Battalion personnel cordoned off the house around 9:30pm on Saturday. They left the house picking up the duo around 1:15am on Sunday.

Sadek Hossain and Mofizur Rahman, both residents of Kunju Sripur, said village people hardly visited Monir's house.

They could sense the presence of the duo for the last 10 to 15 days.
