Police have barred a delegation of BNP from meeting with the family of Abrar Fahad, the student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) who was killed inside a dormitory on October 7.

The law enforcement members forced the BNP leaders to return to Dhaka from the toll plaza of Lalon Shah Bridge at the Bheramara side yesterday morning.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Amam Ullah Aman was among the delegation members.

Aman condemned the act by the law enforcers, saying:   “We came to visit Abrar’ family, but they [police] did not allow us to meet the family.

“This shows how the ruling party [Awami League] is covering up for all the crimes they are committing.”

Syed Mehdi Ahmed Roomy, a former BNP MP, also the criticized the government over the police action.

He said: “The government has pre planned the whole thing so that BNP cannot go close to Abrar’s family, as this will unmask Awami League’s real face.”

Bheramara police station OC Abdul Alim said the law and order situation had worsened when Buet Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Saiful Islam came to meet with Abrar’s family at Raydanga village in Kumarkhali on October 9.

“The BNP delegation was discouraged to meet the family for the same reason,” he said.

Abrar Fahad, a second year student of Buet’s electrical and electronic engineering department, was beaten to death inside the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of October 7.

Some leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Buet unit have been accused of beating him to death, for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. The accusation is yet to be proved.

Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case at Chawkbazar police station in Dhaka October 7. So far, 19 people, mostly Chhatra League leaders have been arrested.
