Khandakar Mahmud Parvez, chairman of International Relations Department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj, has resigned from his post in the face of a student protest.

BSMRSTU Registrar Prof Dr Nurunnabi told Dhaka Tribune that Parvez submitted his letter stepping down from the chairman post at 4pm yesterday and the letter would be sent to the acting vice-chancellor (VC) of the university.

Assistant Prof Parvez is also the nephew of former VC Khondoker Md Nasiruddin, who also resigned last month after weeks of student protest.

Yesterday morning, international relations students staged a sit-in in front of the department demanding Parvez’s resignation, accusing him of corruption and nepotism, and of giving zero marks to 34 students in a recent assignment without any logical reason.

Parvez, however, rejected all the allegations levelled against him.

Golam Mostofa, a third-year student of the department, said: “Khandakar Mahmud Parvez was recruited because he is the nephew of former VC Nasiruddin.

“He can't teach us well. We will continue our protest until he also resigns from the department as an assistant professor.''

Parvez joined the department as a section officer in 2017. Later, he was appointed as a lecturer in the department, despite having a second class in honours and masters.

He was promoted to assistant professor and made the department chairman within one and a half years, even though he was not qualified, alleged the students.
