KCC listed 387 charging points for battery-run rickshaws in Khulna city

Electricity lines of Four out of 387 charging points for battery-run rickshaws were cut off in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) on Monday, as the ban, on such vehicles plying on the city, begins Tuesday.

Officials of KCC and West Zone Power Distribution Company conducted drives at 12 charging points in Wards No 22 and 29, and cut the power of four, which used connections from residential electric lines. The remaining eight with trade permit were warned of the ban, said Assistant Engineer Mostafizur Rahman.

He said: "Electricity will be disconnected from 144 charging points in Wards No 21, 22, 23, 28, 30, and 31 in drives conducted from 10am-5pm everyday until October 17. Power will be cut off gradually from other points as well, if they are found charging batteries of rickshaw."

KCC Executive Magistrate Khan Masum Billah, said: "For now, charging points powered by residential electric lines will be disconnected, and lines with trade permit will be warned. If any of the points are found operational after October 15, mobile court will take legal actions against them."

KCC officials say they are monitoring such battery-run rickshaws that move at higher speeds, and are getting in minor accidents daily. There are around 17,000 licensed rickshaws in the city, and 4,299 of them have renewed their license in the past year.
