Most of the 69 complaints were lodged against CCC's revenue, engineering department

In 2015, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) assessed the holding tax of Tk1.43 lakh for a five-storey building in the city's Chandgaon area.

Law abiding citizen, Zahir Ahmed, owner of the building, deposited the whole amount to the designated revenue collector on June 28 the same year, but was given a receipt of only Tk55,000, a total Tk88,000 less than sum paid.

He claimed that the CCC's revenue official misappropriated the rest of the money deposited by him.

Zahir expressed his dissatisfaction and anger during a public hearing on CCC, jointly organized by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Chittagong Metropolitan Corruption Prevention Committee. The hearing was held at the city's Shah Alam Bir Uttam Auditorium of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday.

During the public hearing, a total of 69 complaints were lodged regarding the services provided by CCC.

Abdul Matin, a businessman, complained that Jane Alam, Circle 5 revenue official (now suspended), took Tk33 lakh from him promising to allot a plot at CCC's Lake City Project.

But the official neither allocated the land nor returned the money, the sufferer added.

Responding to which, CCC authorities informed that Jane Alam was suspended on corruption charges and a departmental case is ongoing against him.

ACC Commissioner AFM Aminul Islam asked the corporation authorities to take steps so that Abdul Matin gets his money back.

Seeking anonymity, a person lodged a complaint with the ACC that the CCC’s Superintendent Engineer, Sudip Basak, gave the construction work of two weighbridges to his cousin.

Replying to the allegations, Sudip Basak said that everything was done in compliance with the rules.

The ACC Commissioner asked the chief executive officer of CCC to submit a report within a week in this regard.

The other complaints leveled against CCC included tender manipulation, allocating shops against the rules, and irregularities in waste collection from households.

The hearing was chaired by Additional Divisional Commissioner (Development) Nurul Alam Nizami, and CCC Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin was present as the special guest.
