A first-year student of the Economics department was stabbed by miscreants on Friday night

Students of Rajshahi University (RU) have blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway, in protests over an attack on a RU student on Friday night.

They started protests from around 12:20pm on Saturday. Earlier, they protested from around 9:15pm to the early hours of Friday over the same issue.

The protestors are demanding the university authorities lodge a case on behalf of the injured student and have the perpetrator arrested within 12 hours, among four other points in a five-point demand.

According to campus sources, a first-year student of the Economics department of RU, Firoz, was walking beside the stadium with his friend at around 8:45pm Friday.

At that time, a group of miscreants blocked Firoz's path and took him to a nearby field, where they robbed him of his phone and money.

When Firoz tried to scream, they stabbed him and fled. Nearby people heard his screams and rescued him.

Later, he was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

After news about the incident spread, students of RU Kriyashil Chhatra Shangathan blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway around 9:30pm. They were joined by students from the Economics department.

They claimed that the university authorities had failed to provide security for the students, and chanted anti-authority slogans.

The student also refused to listen to the RU Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman despite the latter's repeated attempts to talk to them.

Meanwhile, the traffic on the highway came to a standstill due to the blockade. This caused immense suffering for the passengers, and many were seen leaving their vehicles to walk to their destinations.

The proctor could not be reached for any comments.
