Three members of Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) have been suspended, and five others were closed, for their alleged involvement in Ilish fishing during a fishing ban.

Confirming the matter on Tuesday, BMP Deputy Police Commissioner Moyazzem Hussain Bhuiyan said: "Investigation into the allegation is on-going.”

The suspended policemen are - Sub Inspector Anisur Rahman, and constables Md Mohammad Ali, and Zulfikar, who were on duty at Barisal Port police station.

Five others - assistant sub inspectors Ekram Hossain, Tarikul Islam, Sohel Rana, and constables Zakir Hossain, and Ibrahim, were closed to BMP police line.

Anowar Hossain Talukder, officer in charge (OC) of the Barisal Port police station, said: "The action was taken because the accused police personnel, without informing and taking permission from the concerned authorities, went Ilish fishing on the Tentulia River  under Baufal upazila of Patuakhali district, during the fishing ban of October 9-30."

"The area is out of jurisdiction."

Jasim Uddin, Bauphal Upazila Fishery officer, said: "They [the police personnel] were detained by officials of the fishery department and law enforcement officials on the night of October 20, and handed over to Kalaiya River police camp under Baufal Upazila of Patuakhali."

They were later sent to Barisal Port police station, he added.
