Farmers in Narsingdi are going to incur heavy losses in this year’s Aman paddy crop,  attacked by pests in several areas recently.

On around 3590 hectares of land in four unions: namely Gazaria, Char Sindur, Jinardi, and Danga unions, and Ghorasal municipality of Palash upazila, farmers have planted Aman paddy.

Farmers in these areas are supposed to harvest the paddy within the next one and a half months, according to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) of the upazila.

But farmers are frustrated. They say they were hopeful about a bumper Aman crop, but a pest attack in the paddy fields o f Chanla, Malita, Sultanpur, Gokulnagar, and Char Sindur villages has dampened their spirits. Despite using insecticides upon the advice of the upazila agriculture office they have been unable to curb the pestilence.

Kamal Hossain and Jamal Uddin from Gokulnagar village of Palash upazila said they usually get 20 maunds of rice from 20 decimals of cropland. But this time, they may not get the expected crop, although insecticides were used upon the guidance of agriculture officers.

Another farmer, Nasir Uddin from Sultanpur village expressed frustration, saying they are worried about the rice crop as pests have started attacking right when the paddy has started to sprout.

Amirul Islam, upazila agriculture officer, said: ''Pestilence has attacked on very little cropland, turning the sheafs of paddy  yellow. We have already suggested farmers use pesticides three times, which will hopefully put a stop to the pestilence, and we are hoping to get a bumper crop.''

He also added that the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)  set the target for Aman production at 13470 metric tons in the upazila, this current season.
