Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council delegation made courtesy call on Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi

A four-member delegation of Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council, a platform for the religious minority communities, made a courtesy call on Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, ameer of Hefazat-e-Islam, in Chittagong’s Hathazari upazila Monday afternoon.

The delegates, led by the council’s General Secretary Rana Dasgupta, met with the hardliner Islamist leader at Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa in Hathazari, according to a press statement issued by the council on Monday.

During the meeting, the Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council delegates thanked Shafi, on behalf of the religious minorities, for maintaining peace and order in the area during the recent violence in Bhola.

They also sought Shafi’s blessing so they would be able to maintain communal harmony in future. In response, Shafi offered his blessings for them.

The other three members of the delegation were Indunandan Dutta, member of the unity council’s central advisory board, Dr Gobinda Prasad Mohajan, vice president of the council’s North Chittagong district unit, and Dr Ashok Kumar Deb, general secretary of the council’s Hathazari upazila committee, the press statement said.

A protest, sparked by hate speech against Islam via fabricated Facebook messages, turned violent and led to a clash between a mob of Islamist protesters and police in Borhanuddin upazila, Bhola on October 20, which killed four people and injured 200 others.

In response to the Bhola clash on the same day, an unruly mob in Hathazari, after bringing out a procession in protest from Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa, went on a violent rampage and vandalized Hathazari police station.

However, Azizul Haque Islamabadi, central organizing secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, claimed that no student of the Qawmi Madrasa had taken part in the vandalism.
