Nurses of Kurigram General Hospital are abstaining from providing health services, to protest the death of one of their colleagues due to wrong treatment she received at the hospital.

Hajera Aktar who was in her mid-20s, died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on Sunday morning, three days after she gave birth to her child, according to doctors and the agitating nurses.

After news of her death spread, the nurses at Kurigram General Hospital locked several wards and began protesting. Placing a seven-point charter of demands, the nurses said their protest would continue until the demands were met.

The hospital’s Supervisor, Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam, said they were aware of the demands. “Steps will be taken after investigation.”

Saying he was notified about the protest, Kurigram’s Civil Surgeon Dr Habibur Rahman also said that legal action would follow based on the findings of investigation into the nurses’ allegations.

Hajera’s colleagues and doctors said she was admitted to Kurigram General Hospital last Thursday after she went into labour. The hospital’s gynaecologist Dr Amit Kumar Basu performed a c-section surgery and delivered her baby later that day.

However, she was transferred to RMCH for better treatment after she suffered excessive blood loss following the surgery. Hajera was also moved to the Intensive Care Unit after her condition deteriorated, but she eventually died on Sunday morning.

Kurigram General Hospital’s Resident Medical Officer Dr Shahinur Rahman said: “Based on our primary diagnosis, we think the pregnant nurse died from excessive blood loss after she suffered from disseminated intravascular coagulation.”

Hajera’s baby boy, however, is alive and healthy.

One of the protesting nurses, Tinni, says Hajera who joined Kurigram General Hospital in November last year, died because of wrong treatment at the hands of Dr Amit.

Holding him responsible for Hajera’s death, the nurses handed over to the hospital authorities their seven demands later in the day.

Cancellation of Amit’s license to practice medicine everywhere, including Green Life Clinic, and responsibility for the newborn to be given to Amit, are some of their demands.

“We won’t call off our protest until the authorities meet our demands,” said Tinni.

Dr Amit was not available for comment on the allegations against him.
