Students of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) have carried out protests with a four-point demand, including the withdrawal of show cause notice against three of their teachers.

The students staged a demonstration in front of the university’s administrative building around 10am on Monday.

They carried out a procession surrounding the campus around midday, and called off the protest for the day around 1pm.

A fourth year student of the economics department, Abdul Alim, said: "An audio recording of an applicant for a teaching position at the history department, asking Vice-Chancellor Rustom Ali to give back his bribe money, went viral on October 24.

"Three teachers commented over the matter on Facebook, for which the university's administration sent them show cause notices."

The three teachers, who received show cause notice, are Assistant Prof Yahiya Bepari of economics department, Lecturer Komrul Hasan Konok of urban and territory development department, and Assistant Prof Kamal Hossain of business administration department.

The students said the show cause notices need to be withdrawn within 24-hours, the proctor and student advisor of the university must resign, the vice-chancellor should remain confined in the campus and the audio recording should be investigated.

The protest will continue if the demands are not met, they added.

The university's Proctor Dr Pritom Kumar Das said: "We have talked to the students, but they still have not given us any written demand.

"Once there is a written demand, we will inform the administration, and the show cause notice problem with the teachers will be solved once they have replied."

"We do not see any reason for the students to protest," he added.
