A case was filed against 50 people on Saturday night
Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of ruling Awami League, have thrown the principal of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute into a pond on the campus.
The incident took place on Saturday afternoon. Principal Farid Uddin Ahmed managed to save himself as he knew how to swim.
Farid Uddin said: "A group of Chhatra League men picked me up while I was returning to my office after zuhr prayers. They threw me into the pond, and left the place.
"The Chhatra League activists were angry with me as I did not give in to their unjust demands at different times," he said.
"Several Chhatra League men came to me on Saturday morning, and asked me to allow two students in their seventh semester to fill up their forms and participate in the upcoming examinations.
"But their attendance was below the requirement for sitting for the exams. I told them to go to the concerned departmental head, which angered them," he added.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Chandrima police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Md Golam Mostofa said he visited the spot after the incident.
"The principal filed a case against 50 people, citing eight names, on Saturday night," he said.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi city unit Chhatra League formed a six-member probe committee to look into the incident.
In a press release, the organization said the probe body has been asked to submit its report within three days.
"Action will be taken against those who are found to be guilty in the incident," it said.
The polytechnic institute's Chhatra League unit President Mehedi Hasan Rimel said the unit's Joint General Secretary Kamal Hossain Sourav was present during the incident.
