Authorities file case against 50-60 unnamed protesters

A cross section of teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday sought intervention from the President and  the Chancellor of the university, Md Abdul Hamid, to resolve the indefinite strike for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor, Dr Farzana Islam.

The university authorities also filed a case with Ashulia police station on Friday night against 50 to 60 unnamed protesters for allegedly assaulting Assistant Proctor Mohibur Rouf Shaibal.

Ashulia police station Inspector (operation) Ziaul Haque said: "The University authorities filed a case under penal codes no 143, 323, 324, 307 and 34. An investigation is currently underway."

On Wednesday at 9:30am, protesters tried to padlock the entrance gate of the old faculty of arts and humanities building. Classbound students had a heated argument with Nazir Amin Chowdhury Joy, president of the student union. To avoid any unnecessary incident, Assistant Proctor Shaibal went there to rescue Nazir. Protesters then assaulted the assistant proctor, according to the police charge sheet.

During the scuffle, Shaibal was allegedly attacked with a sharp object in his groin. He was admitted to Enam Medical College and Hospital.

Meanwhile, videos of the incident circulated on social media where it shows that protesters including Nazir and Camelia Sharmin Chura, were blockading the entrance gate.

In the video, a few students who were unable to enter the building attacked Nazir Amin. Assistant Proctor Shaibal started videotaping with one hand and dragged Nazir Amin down the floor with the other. Then Nazir was taken to another teacher who was standing beside Shaibal.

Following the incident, the victims filed a complaint with the proctor and the JU Teachers Association (JUTA), demanding justice for Nazir and Sharmin.

Protesting students claimed this to be a fabricated story and the case was filed to harass them.

On Saturday, the protesters held a press conference  in front of the old administrative building where the spokesperson for the protesters, Associate Professor Rayhan Rhyne, said: "Assistant Proctor Shaibal was moving around after assaulting the protesters. But suddenly he is now saying that he is injured. This is pure drama. This is a fraud case filed by the university administration to harass the students."

The students have been demonstrating on campus since August 23, demanding removal of the university’s VC, Prof Farzana Islam, due to her alleged involvement in corruption.

Protesters also called for a strike on campus on Oct 2, which was later withdrawn for holding a meeting with the VC. However, no solution came from the meeting and the protest continued.
