The students want the VC’s resignation due to her alleged involvement in corruption
Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Monday blocked the main entrance of Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam's residence and staged a sit-in protest continuing their strike for the 10th day on campus demanding her resignation.
Around 100 protesters including teachers and students under the banner of "Jahangirnagar against Corruption" took a procession to the spot and protested with satirical songs against the VC.
Police presence was increased since last morning as the VC could not move out of her house and carry on her administrative work.
JU Sangskritik Jote President Md Ashikur Rahman said: "Initially we had demanded she resign from her position which would've upheld her dignity, but instead of doing so she filed cases against students and orchestrated other harassments. Now she has forced us to take this initiative."
Earlier, a representative team of seven teachers met Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Sunday night.
The protesters held a press conference in front of the old administrative building under the banner “Jahangirnagar against Corruption” on Monday afternoon.
Their spokesperson Prof Rayhan Rain said the blockade will continue until the VC is not removed from her position.
JU unit Samajtantrik Chhatra Front President Mahathir Mohammad said the university administration is pitting protestors and general students against each other.
"They locked the examination controller's office, leaving students to suffer. It was a deplorable decision," he added.
The students have been demonstrating on campus since August 23, demanding the removal of the university VC Prof Farzana, due to her alleged involvement in corruption.
Protesters also called for a strike on campus on Oct 2, which was later withdrawn to hold a meeting with the VC.
However, no solution came from the meeting and the protest continued.
