Chhatra League people locked the provost's room as well as the office rooms of Shaheed Moktar Elahi Hall around 12pm Sunday forcing out university officials
Chhatra League activists of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) locked the administrative rooms of a hall when the authorities concerned did not allot hall seats following their suggestions.
Chhatra League people locked the provost's room as well as the office rooms of Shaheed Moktar Elahi Hall around 12pm Sunday forcing out university officials.
However, upon request of the university administration, the Chhatra League activists, led by former BRU Chhatra League general secretary Mahmud Ul Islam Joy, reopened the rooms around 6pm the same day.
Seeking anonymity, one of the assistant provosts said that Shaheed Moktar Elahi Hall Provost Shahinur Rahman with other university officials, without discussing with the university Chhatra League, interviewed the students who applied for a seat at the hall on Thursday.
They also published a list of those who were allotted a seat at the hall on the same day.
Facing denial of their wishes, the Chhatra League activists started to threaten the officials concerned. On Sunday, when the students allotted seats at the hall came for admission, they were forced out by the agitated Chhatra League workers. They later locked the administrative rooms of the hall, putting a stop to all office work.
According to hall office sources, of the 240 seats in Shaheed Moktar Elahi Hall, university Chhatra League led by Joy extorted money from at least 122 of those on a monthly basis.
When our correspondent tried to contact Mahmud Ul Islam Joy, he did not receive any of the calls.
Contacted, BRU Chhatra League President Tushar Kibria said: "I am in Dhaka right now. I have heard about the incident.
"But I am not aware of why it happened."
Commenting on the proceedings, Shaheed Moktar Elahi Hall Provost Shahinur Rahman said: "I have heard about the news of the offices being locked down.
"We will sort this matter out after discussing with the university authorities."
