Thousands of houses were damaged while trees were uprooted during the cyclone

The cyclonic storm Bulbul has lashed Bangladesh's coastal districts leaving behind a vast trail of devastation.

Thousands of houses were damaged while trees were uprooted during the cyclone.

The powerful storm also destroyed crops and damaged embankments in the coastal districts.

In Khulna, as many as 1,500 houses were destroyed at Koyra upazila due to the cyclone. A number of trees were also uprooted there.

Md Zafar Rana, an official of the cyclone monitoring centre at the upazila, said the information regarding damage caused by the storm was gathered by the union parishad chairmen.

"We are working to get a complete list in this regard," he added.

In Dacope, 1,765 houses were damaged and 750 fish enclosures washed away due to the cyclone.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdul Wadud confirmed the matter.

The cyclone crossed Khulna coast around 5am on Sunday with a heavy precipitation, flooding low-lying areas in the district.

In Satkhira, the powerful storm destroyed 47,000 houses, damaged croplands, shrimp enclosures, and uprooted trees in different upazilas.

Uprooted trees suspended road communications in different areas where members of Bangladesh Army along Fire Service and Civil Defence are working to restore communications. Power supply has remained snapped in those areas.

The district's Department of Agricultural Extension Deputy Director Arbinda Bishwas said 25,000 hectares of Aman paddy and 1,200 hectares of vegetable crops were damaged at a primary estimate due to the cyclone.

Department of Fisheries official Moshiur Rahman said at least 6,000 shrimp enclosures were destroyed in Shyamnagar and Ashashuni upazilas.

In Bhola, 22 houses were damaged in Lalmohan and Charfashion upazilas.

Besides, low-lying areas of Dhal Char in Charfashion, Char Mojammel Kalatolir Char in Manpura, and Char Jahiruddin in Tazumuddin were inundated due to the 3-4ft high tidal waves.

In Bagerhat, a number of houses along with trees were damaged at nine upazilas.

Low-lying areas in the district went under water due to torrential downpour triggered by the storm.

Department of Agricultural Extension said the cyclone severely damaged Aman paddy on 5,000 hectares of land along with farmlands of winter vegetables.

Deputy Commissioner Mamunur Rashid said instructions have been given to UNOs to determine the losses.

In Barguna, low-lying regions of the district have been flooded as three main rivers -- Bishkhali, Payra, and Baleshwar -- are flowing 25cm over danger level due to the storm.

The district's Water Development Board official, Md Mahtab, confirmed the matter on Sunday.
