Protesters claimed that police conducted raids at residences of the protesting teachers and students

A section of students and teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday resumed demonstrations demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam over allegations of corruption, after a two-day gap.

At 11am Tuesday, protesters started demonstration in front of the old administrative building of JU. As part of the protest, they organized an exhibition with paintings on the VC’s alleged corruption and Chhatra League's violence against students. A number of eminent personalities visited the exhibition and expressed solidarity with the protesters.

Later in the afternoon, the protesters also observed a one-minute silence to protest against Chhatra league's violent acts.

They also organized a musical event and declared that they would bring out a procession at 11am today, according to our JU correspondent.

Meanwhile, the university authorities have tightened security on the campus. Security guards at the main gates were checking everyone's identity cards and restricted the entry for anyone who was not a student or employed at the university.

Regular academic and administrative activities were conducted in the morning.

One of the officers from the administrative building said protesters came inside the building when they working at noon, and forced them to leave.

Protesters vowed to continue their demonstration until the VC is removed.

Dhaka University Central Students' Union's (DUCSU) VP Nurul Haque Nur said: “It is heartbreaking that the prime minister has taken sides with the VC, when Chhatra league violently attacked protesting students. This protest is not against the VC, it is against corruption and injustice.”

National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports Member-Secretary Anu Muhammad, who is also an ex-student of JU, said: “JU is going through a difficult time. Students are wasting valuable time in their life. Everyone knows the VC is responsible for creating this mess.”

Communist Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Shah Alom, Socialist Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Khalequzzaman, Communist Party of Bangladesh's (Marxist–Leninist) President Masud Rana, Chhatra Front's General Secretary Nasir Uddin Prince, University senate member Mohabbat Hossain Khan, Bangladesh Student Union's General Secretary Anik Ray and the chief coordinator of Ganasanghati Andolon Zonayed Saki attended the protest exhibition, among others.
