Case filed for Chittagong gas explosion

Shahina Akhter, wife of rickshaw puller Mahmudul Haque, a victim of the tragic incident, lodged the case with Kotwali police station on Monday

A case has been filed in connection with the gas pipeline explosion in Chittagong's Patharghata neighbourhood, which left seven people dead and at least fifteen others injured.

Shahina Akhter, wife of rickshaw puller Mahmudul Haque, a victim of the tragic incident, lodged the case with Kotwali police station on Monday.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali zone) Nobel Chakma, said: "A case has been filed regarding the incident. 

"The plaintiff filed the case naming two individuals. We cannot disclose the idetities of the accused now with an investigation in progress."

According to Fire Service and Civil Defence, the blast was caused by gas, leaked either from the pipeline or the riser inside the building Barua Bhaban, on Brickfield Road in Patharghata. 

Later on the same day, two probe committees were formed by Chittagong District Administration and Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) respectively, to investigate the gas pipeline explosion.

Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Md Ilias Hossain said: "A five member committee has been formed, with Chittagong Additional District Magistrate (ADM) AZM Shariful Islam as head. 

"The committee will submit its report within seven working days." 

Meanwhile, CMP formed a three member committee with its Deputy Commissioner (South) Mehedi Hasan as head to investigate the blast.
