Five Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) officers were attacked and injured when they went to recover a mobile phone and a knife used in a murder.
The incident occurred Wednesday around 10pm in Arapara village of Jhenaidah's Kaliganj upazila.
The injured officers are Sub-Inspectors (SI) Sohel Hossain, Humayun, and Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI) Hafizur Rahman, Md Zafar and Abdul Khalek. Among them, ASI Hafizur was detained in a room and beaten separately, according to PBI.
Upon receiving the news, additional police force from Kaliganj police station went to the spot, rescued and took the injured officers to hospital.
Additional Superintendent of Jhenaidah PBI MKH Jahangir said: "PBI recently arrested Tarik Hasan Sabbir and Yasin Arafat and later placed them on a two day remand, suspecting them for the murder of a madrasa student. Sabbir confessed to the murder and informed PBI that the knife used for murder and the mobile used for sending messages was at his house."
"Sabbir's father Mushfikur Rahman Dablu and uncle Mustak Ahmed Lavlu, along with 12/13 others, attacked the PBI officers when they were getting in the car after recovering the evidence from the house. They also took away the collected evidence and the case docket," added Jahangir.
He further commented that among the five injured officers, SI Sohel and ASI Hafizur were admitted to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex as they were critically injured and a case was being prepared in this connection.
However, Sabbir's uncle Mostafizur Rahman Bizu, former mayor of Kaliganj municipality, said: "PBI took pictures of Sabbir holding a knife from the kitchen that night when they could not find any weapons even after searching through the pond all day. That is when we detained one of the officers," added Bizu.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliganj police station Md Mahfuzur Rahman said police have detained Mushfikur Rahman Dablu and Mustak Ahmed Lavlu for attacking the PBI officers.
"A case is being prepared in this connection. Details will be released later," said the OC.
