Language Movement veteran Ahmed Ali dies

He was 97

Advocate Ahmed Ali, a veteran of the 1952 Language Movement and an organizer during the 1971 Liberation War, passed away in Dhaka on Friday night.

He was admitted to Apollo Hospital in the city and undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, where he breathed his last late Friday. He was 97.

He left behind five daughters and four sons, numerous relatives and countless well wishers  to mourn his death.

The first namaz-e-janaza of Ahmed Ali will be held at his village home in Kajlia village of Brahmanbaria at 10am on Saturday. He will be buried at the Racecourse graveyard after the second namaz-e-janaza at the Comilla Town Hall grounds after Asr prayers.

Ahmed Ali became MLA of Gana Parishad in the 1970 election from greater Comilla-5 constituency (now Brahmanbaria 5).

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Advocate Ahmed Ali, a close associate of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and a former member of the Provincial Assembly and the former Awami League general secretary for greater Comilla district.

In a condolence message, the prime minister recalled with profound respect the contributions of Ahmed Ali to the Liberation War and Bangladesh Awami League.

“The country and nation have suffered an irreparable loss in the death of an organizer of the liberation war and a political leader like Ahmed Ali,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
