'At the end of the legal process, the body was handed over to them'
Fire service recovered the body of 23-year-old Afroza Khanam, the woman who jumped in the Madhumati River in front of her two children from the Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Bridge in Gopalganj, on Friday four days after her disappearance.
Confirming the matter, Tungipara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AFM Nasim said fire brigade and diver teams continued searching the missing woman. “On Friday morning, the fire service personnel saw her body floating in the river.”
“Later, Afroza’s body was brought to the river bank. On information, police recovered the body and brought it to the police station.”
He further said that the relatives applied to take Afroza’s body without any complaint and autopsy. “At the end of the legal process, the body was handed over to them.”
Quoting eyewitnesses, the OC Nasim said that Afroza Khanam, wearing a burqa, stopped at Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Bridge on Tuesday around 12pm. Later, she jumped to the river in front of her two children—Fahmida Islam, 6, and Abdus Salam, 4..
Afroza’s sister Maksuda Begum said Afroza might have committed suicide from frustration of failing to sustain her family with the very little amount of money she got from her Oman expatriate husband.
