BSMRSTU history dept students to go on hunger strike

General students are worried that the shutdown of classes will be prolonged, amid the declaration of hunger strike by the protesting students

Students of the Department of History at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) have announced that they will go on a hunger strike from on Thursday, demanding the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) approval for their department.

Students of the History Department, after a procession in the university campus on Wednesday, decided to go on a hunger strike until their demands are met.

History Department student Karimul Haque said: “We will not return home until our department is approved. We will begin a hunger strike from Thursday.”

General students are worried that the shutdown of classes will be prolonged, amid the declaration of hunger strike by the protesting students.

Meanwhile, UGC formed a seven-member committee led by Prof Dil Afroza Begum, to resolve all issues related to the university on Tuesday.

Prof Md Nuruddin Ahmed, registrar of BSMRSTU told the Dhaka Tribune that the committee will examine all the issues and provide recommendations to UGC.

The other members of the committee include Prof Md Alamgir Hossain, Prof Md Sajjad Hossain, Director for Public University Prof Kamal Hossain, BSMRSTU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Shahjahan, BSMRSTU Registrar Prof Md Nuruddin Ahmed, and Biology Faculty Dean Prof MA Sattar.

History Department students started their demonstration after UGC decided to decline the approval of the department in a meeting held on February 6.
