The accused was forced to marry the victim
A pregnant woman died under treatment at a hospital in Dhaka, after she was set on fire reportedly by her husband in Jhenaidah.
The deceased Munni Akter Pinki, 25, died at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Saturday night. She was primarily admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital after being set on fire in Hatkhola area of Jhenaidah town on February 16.
Police arrested her husband Sohrab Hossain Sourav on Sunday, after the victim’s mother Kajal Begum filed a case against him with Jhenaidah Sadar police station.
Kajal Begum said Sourav had been sexually involved with Pinky before marriage and had refused to marry her. However, once the matter was brought before local arbitration, he was forced to marry her in September last year.
“Sourav’s family was unwilling to accept her as his bride. She was often beaten to compel her to go for a divorce. On February 16, Sourav asked Pinky for Tk2,000, but when she refused to give him the money, Sourav assaulted her and set her on fire,” added Kajal.
Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police Md Hasanuzzaman said: “We believe that the incident is the result of a family dispute. Sohrab Hossain has been arrested.”
