Osman Ali, a local rickshaw-puller, woke up around 8am and discovered the pangolin trapped inside his well adjacent to his resident in Golatila near Nalua tea garden
A pangolin, the endangered mammal locally known as "Banrui" was rescued from a village in Chunarght upazila of Habiganj on Wednesday morning.
Osman Ali, a local rickshaw-puller, woke up around 8am and discovered the pangolin trapped inside his well adjacent to his resident in Golatila near Nalua tea garden.
Soon after the news spread, a good number of local people gathered at Osman’s home to catch a glimpse of the now rare animal, which was once commonly found in the local wilderness.
Osman Ali said: “I was first frightened when I heard something rustling inside the well. But after I saw the animal trying to protect itself, I was less frightened and carefully caught it. I found the animal to be very fascinating. It is around four feet long and weighs around five kg.”
Later in the day, officials from the forest department were called and the rare animal was handed over to them in good health.
Later, the district forest department released it into the Satchhari National Park.
Habiganj Forest Department Deputy Forester Rehan Mahmud said: “The pangolin was successfully rescued in good health and has been released into the wilds of Satchhari National Park.”
Assistant Professor Dr Shuvas Chandra Deb of Habiganj Government Brindaban College, said: “There was once a time when this particular animal was found in abundance in Habiganj.”
The International Union for Conservation of Nature recently unlisted the animal’s category from “endangered” to “critically endangered”.
