2 others held in Khagrachari over rumour

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) have detained a physician on charges of spreading rumours over coronavirus via Facebook messenger in the port city.

The police made the arrest in a restaurant in the city on Saturday.

The arrestee was identified as Iftekhar Adnan, health affairs secretary of Jubo Dal’s Chittagong city unit. 

He is currently employed with a private clinic in the city.  

In the 35-second long audio clip, the doctor asked one Rohan to be careful over the coronavirus outbreak. 

During primary interrogation, the doctor confessed to police to committing the offence, admitting that it was his voice in the audio clip. 

"Today, I have turned away two coronavirus-positive patients. Now, three more coronavirus patients are receiving treatment. So far, as I know, 18-19 coronavirus patients have died over the past two days. The government is hiding the information,” said the doctor in the audio clip which went viral.

Speaking at a press briefing following the arrest, CMP Deputy Commissioner (North) Bijoy Basak said that the doctor had deliberately spread the rumour in a plot to embarrass the government. 

"We urge people not to share any information without verification. We will take necessary legal steps if anybody shares false information without verification,” said the police official.

CMP Additional Commissioner Shyamol Kumar Nath said that a case would be filed against the physician for spreading rumours. 

Covid-19 : 2 held in Khagrachari over rumour

Meanwhile, police in Khagrachari have detained two men for allegedly spreading rumours on social media about a death due to coronavirus outbreak 

Dighinala and Manikchori police apprehended the two men on Saturday afternoon. The arrestees have been identified as Sujan Das and Adityo Bhattacharya.

Police said they were being interrogated, and legal action would be taken against the two men. 

Khagrachhari Police Superintendent Abdul Aziz confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune. He said there had been no Covid-19 detection in Khagrachhari yet.
