OC withdrawn following man's mysterious custodial death in Barguna

A three-member probe committee was formed to investigate the mysterious death inside the Amtali police station

Amtali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Bashar has been withdrawn following the mysterious death of Shanu Hawlader under police custody in Amtali upazila of Barguna.

Barguna Superintendent of Police (SP) Maruf Hossain signed the order to withdraw OC Abul and attached him to Barguna Police lines on Friday following the directive of Barishal Range's Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md Shafiqul Islam.

On Thursday, Shanu Hawladar's body was found at the Barguna police station.

Shanu's family alleged that he was killed due to police brutality for failing to bribe OC Abul Bashar and OC Monoranjan Mistri with Tk3 lakh.

A three-member probe committee was formed to investigate the mysterious death inside the Amtali police station headed by Barguna Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration & Crime) Tofael Ahmed.

According to locals, a man named Ibrahim was killed by some unknown miscreants on November 3, 2019 at Paschim Kolagacchi village in Gulishkhali union of the upazila.

Shanu's stepbrother Mizanur Rahman Howladar was one of the accused in that case.

Police detained Shanu as a suspect on Monday, it is when the police officials demanded the bribe.

On Thursday afternoon, Amtali police station OC (Investigation) Manoranjan Mistri and Duty Officer Arifur Rahman were suspended over negligence of duty.

Local Union Parishad Member Md Golam Mostafa said: "It is not acceptable that an innocent man was tortured and killed for money while in police custody. We demand justice."

Shanu's son Sakib Hossain expressed satisfaction over OC Abul's withdrawal and said: "I demand justice as soon as possible. OC Abul is the one who beat my father to death."

ASP Tofael said: "We have started an investigation to find out the real reason behind Shanu's death. We hope to finish the investigation as soon as possible."
