A total of 55 samples have been tested at BITID as of Friday

Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID) positively identified the first Covid-19 case in Chittagong on Friday.

"The patient is currently in institutional isolation," said Chittagong Civil Surgeon Sheikh Fazle Rabbi.

BITID started performing coronavirus tests in Chittagong after receiving around 150 testing kits from the government on March 26. A total of 55 samples were tested until Friday.

As many as 971 people have been kept in-home quarantine in the district. Of them, 102 people have completed their two weeks of the quarantine period.

The Chittagong district administration also locked down six buildings in the port city's Damapara area after the first novel coronavirus case was confirmed Friday night.

“Two families including the landlord and the tenant live in the two-storey building at Dampara. The building will be placed under full lockdown while movement will be restricted for the residents of five other surrounding buildings where some 30 families live,” said Executive Magistrate Mamnun Ahmed Anik.

Dr Ashim Kumar Nath, superintendent of Chittagong General Hospital, also told Dhaka Tribune that they found remote contact history of the patient who tested positive.

“On March 12, the mother-in-law of his daughter went to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. We suspect the patient came into contact with her.

"We have also come to know that the 67-year-old patient was admitted to other hospitals before coming here. The police are collecting the lists of all the healthcare professionals who were on duty at that time,” said Dr Nath.

Civil Surgeon Dr Fazle Rabbi also said that they have a stock of 3,998 personal protective equipment (PPE).

Moreover, processes are underway to set up 10 ICU beds equipped with ventilators at the Chittagong General Hospital at Andarkilla.

Earlier in the afternoon, Health Minister Zahid Maleque, in a virtual briefing, had confirmed five new coronavirus cases in the country.

With this, the total number of coronavirus patients stands at 61. No new death was reported in the last 24 hours. So far, six people have died from the virus infection in the country.
