The others had been directed to stay home quarantined.
A total of 200 people, who returned to their ancestral homes from Dhaka and Narayanganj defying government directives, have been quarantined in Gaibandha.
Md Shahriar Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gaibandha Sadar police station, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
Among those 200, a total of 92 have been put under quarantine in two educational institutions in the district’s Fulchhari upazila.
Meanwhile, the others had been directed to stay home quarantined.
Most of the returnees were forced to come back home as they became jobless because of the prolonged government-imposed “holiday” intended to combat the coronavirus outbreak.
Officials from the local administration said that returnees have been put under quarantine as they came from Dhaka and Narayanganj, where a good number of people have been infected and also died due to cluster-based transmission of coronavirus.
A press release issued by the district’s deputy commissioner said that a total of five people have so far tested positive for coronavirus in Gaibandha.
The Bangladesh authorities till Thursday detected a total of 330 Covid-19 patients.
Covid-19 has so far led to the deaths of over 89,000 people in more than 200 countries and territories, including 21 in Bangladesh.
