Around 2,200 people from Dhaka and Narayanganj have returned to Kushtia in the last two weeks

Update : 22 Apr 2020, 02:50 PM

Three people have been diagnosed with the new coronavirus (Covid-19) in Kushtia, making them the first Covid-19 patients in the districts.

The results of the two male patients, including a bank official and a policeman, came back positive on Wednesday morning, said Civil Surgeon Dr HM Anwarul Islam. “Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) confirmed the rest results.”

Subsequently, local administrations have put their respective houses under lockdown.

According to the deputy commissioner’s office sources, around 2,200 people from Dhaka and Narayanganj have returned to Kushtia in the last two weeks. Even though they each have been put in 14-day mandatory quarantine, it's hardly proving to be effective, he added.

As of Wednesday, a total of 339 samples of suspected Covid-19 patients were to Dhaka for testing. Of those, 157 results came back, with two positive and 155 as negative.

The new Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) lab will start testing samples for Covid-19 at Kushtia General Hospital from Thursday.
