Mentally challenged woman burn to death in Gazipur house fire

A mentally challenged woman has burned to death in a fire at Kewa Paschim Khanda area of Sreepur upazila, Gazipur.

The deceased, Asma Akter, 30, died after getting caught in the fire that broke out at one Abdul Kader's house around 12:30am on Sunday, said Maona Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Miah Raj Uddin.

Asma was alone in the house at time and was tied to an iron chain due to her mental illness, he said.

"The fire broke out following an electric short circuit, and two firefighting units brought the fire under control after an hour," Raj added.

Asma’s charred body, with the iron chain still on her wrist, was recovered afterwards, he said.

He also said that the fire also burned eight more houses adjacent to Kader's home.
