Sramik League leader arrested in Bogra over extortion

Police on Monday arrested a former leader of Jubo Sramik League in Bogra on allegations of extorting money from a bus carrying farm workers.

The arrested person, identified as Shahinur Rahman Shahin, 45, is a former general secretary of the district Jubo Sramik League unit.

Bogra Sub-Town police out-post SI Rahim Uddin confirmed the matter.

According to Rahim, a bus carrying 46 farm workers was heading to Comilla for harvesting paddy from Nilphamari.

When the bus reached Char matha area in the town of Bogra at around 2am on Monday, Shahinur along with five others intercepted the bus and demanded Tk 5,000 from the driver.

On being informed soon, police arrested Shahin while the others managed to flee the scene. Later, the driver Monir Hossain filed a case with Sadar police station, accusing Shahin and 13/14 unnamed people of the crime.

At noon on Monday, police produced Shahinur in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Billal Hossain with a three-day remand prayer. 

However, the court granted a one-day remand.
