Meanwhile, sugar mill workers in Jhenaidah demonstrated demanding arrears
Owners and workers of shopping stores in Thakurgaon staged demonstration demanding to keep their shops open to hold Eid market.
The demonstration took place near the district’s deputy commissioner’s office on Monday afternoon, found this correspondent in a visit to the spot.
Workers expressed their agitation as they need salary and bonuses ahead of Eid which they say is not possible if the shops remain closed.
Expressing a similar sentiment owners said they would not be able to pay their workers if the situation continues.
Shopping malls and marketplaces other than of essential products were ordered to remain closed at all times by the district administration from Sunday in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus(Covid-19).
The decision was taken as the authorities had been struggling to enforce social distancing when the shops operated on a limited scale during day time for a past few days.
Workers protest demeanding arrears in Jhenaidah
Workers of Mobarakganj Sugar Mill staged a demonstration demanding arrears in front of their factory in Jhenaidah's Kaliganj upazila.
The protesters have also brought out a procession at the factory premises and blocked the Jhenaidah-Jessore Highway for half an hour on Sunday, reports our Jhenaidah correspondent Nayon Khandoker.
The protest was called off after authorities assured them of meeting their demands.
Workers at the protest said around 800 workers of the factory are not getting salaries for the past four months, due to which they have been leading a miserable life.
Among others Golam Rosul, president of the sugar mill's workers union and Shariful Islam, general secretary of the union spoke at the protest.
