The woman is mentally challenged
A mentally challenged woman, who had been experiencing labour pains beside a road, was rescued by police in Shariatpur.
Police rescued the woman from Bhajesshar Bazar area in Naria upazila on Saturday, reports a correspondent.
Md Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Naria police station, said as soon as the woman was taken into the care of the police, she was admitted to a nearby maternity hospital, run by Red Crescent Society.
When the nurses of the maternity hospital failed to carry out the delivery, the woman was shifted to Naria Sadar hospital where she gave birth to twins at around 11:45pm. The twins have been doing well, said the OC.
No one came near the woman from fear of contracting coronavirus infection from her despite the fact that she had been suffering from labour pains for hours, added the OC.
Superintendent of Police SM Asrafuzzaman said as the woman was mentally challenged, “we want the twins to be adopted through legal procedures. Besides, we will admit the woman in a hospital for treatment of her mental condition."
