12 killed, 22 injured in road accidents

At least 12 people were killed and 22 others injured in separate road accidents in six districts of the country.

The accidents took place between Monday night and Tuesday afternoon.

In Sirajganj, four people, including two of a family were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway in Nalka area.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning when a freight truck -- which was carrying the passengers-- turned upside down critically injuring the four, said OC Khairul Islam of Hatikumrul police station.

The deceased, Ali Akbar, 40, his wife, Nurjahan Begum, 28, Sohel Rana Hossain, 22 and an unidentified woman were taken to the hospital, where they died while undergoing treatment, confirmed Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Faridul Islam of Sirajganj General Hospital.

“We seized the truck but the driver and his assistant fled the spot,” said OC Khairul.

In Moulvibazar, two people were killed and nine others were injured when the microbus they were riding lost control and got crashed on Gobindabati area of Rajnagar upazila.

The deceased, Afroza Hossain Nishu, 35, and Badruzzaman, 45, are both teachers of a private college in Dhaka and the rest remained unidentified till the filing of this report.

"Thirteen passengers were travelling to Rajshahi in a microbus to celebrate Eid holidays with their respective families. They fell victim of the accident on Tuesday morning due to a sudden brake dysfunction," said Rajnagar police station OC Abul Hasem.

The injured were taken to Moulvibazar Sadar hospital for treatment, added the OC.

In Jessore, a motorcyclist was killed when his motorcycle collided head-on with a brick-kiln tractor on the Chowgacha-Kotchadpur road on Tuesday morning.

The deceased, Rakib Hasan, 27, was a sales officer, confirmed Chowgacha police station OC Rifat Khan.

In Habiganj, a prisoner named Moyna Miah, 28, was killed in a road accident, when he was returning to his home in Ajmiriganj upazila from the Habiganj prison.

“His bail order came at the evening on Monday. When he took a three-wheeler to return to his home around 10pm, it collided head-on with a truck, leaving him dead on the spot,” said Sadar Model police station OC Masuk Ali.

In Gazipur, two people were killed when a covered truck hit and ran them over on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway of Sreepur upazila on Tuesday around 12pm.

The deceased, Rina Begum, 38, and Mehedi Hasan, 45, were crossing the road when a speedy motorcycle hit and injured Rina. While Mehedi Hasan, 45, tried to rescue her from the accident, another speedy vehicle, a covered van hit and ran them over killing them on the spot, police say.

Confirming the incident, Maona Highway police outpost OC Monjurul Islam said: “We are making drives to arrest the responsible people and legal actions will be taken against them.”

In Tangail, two people were killed and eight others were injured in separate road accidents in Sadar and Kalihati upazilas on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Bimol Haider, 19 and Keramat Ali, 40.

In Sadar upazila, a pickup truck carrying Bimol and six others fell into a roadside ditch at Dorun Citra area, which killed Bimol on the spot and injured the others, cofirmed Station Officer Safiqul Islam, of Tangail Fire Service and Civil Defence.

In Kalihati upazila, a truck hit Keramat's motorbike at Poujan cemetery area, killing Keramat on the spot and injuring his fellow riders on the motorbike, according to sources from police.
