Toxic gas from Maa Bricks kiln damages Boro paddy on 20 acres of land near Depa bridge in Nijpara Union of Birganj upazila in Dinajpur Dhaka Tribune

Affected farmers in the area have claimed that the extremely hot air emitted from Maa Bricks kiln is severely damaging their croplands

More than 20 acres of Boro paddy, mango, litchi and corn plants in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur have been badly damaged by the excessive heat and hot air emitted by a nearby brick kiln.

Affected farmers in the area claimed that the extremely hot air emitted from Maa Bricks kiln is severely damaging their croplands.

According to a complaint lodged to Birganj upazila nirbahi office, Maa Bricks, which is situated adjacent to the Depa bridge under No-6 Nijapara UP in the upazila, emitted toxic gas from the kiln on May 21.

The brick kiln labourers, after burning the bricks, open the air pockets of the burner to cool it down, emitting hot air and ashes that spread over to the nearby paddy fields.

Twenty-five farmers, in their complaint, said the paddies of their lands were badly burnt due to the emission of toxic gas from the adjacent brickfield.

However, the Agricultural Department sources said steps have been taken to stop the brick kiln owners from engaging in this practice.

The farmers are on the brink of losing everything after repeatedly facing losses of harvest.

Farmer Arif Kader of Sujalpur Bazar area said: "I planted crops on my land spending a lot of money. But just a few days after the grains started appearing, the heat emitted from the nearby MZH brick kiln burned my crops. I have suffered severe losses."

“Now I do not know what to do,” he added.

Similar sentiments were echoed by several other farmers.

Shamsher Ali, owner of the brick lin , said : "We have been burning bricks in our kilns for 40 years. Nothing like this has ever happened before.”

He termed the incident as an unexpected one.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Yeamin Hossain said they are investigating the matter.

Humaira Mandal, Syedpur upazila Agriculture officer, said necessary measures will be taken to tackle the situation after surveying the paddy fields.

Meanwhile the owner of the brickiln has been asked to stop the activities.

Since May 24, the brickfield has remained closed, he said.

The brick kiln was run illegally, he also said.

“An investigative team has been formed on the basis of the verbal complaints from the farmers. A report will be filed within a few days, and necessary action will be taken based on that report, “he added.
