Police disperse health workers demonstrating over arrears in Sunamganj

Around 234 health workers, who work on a contract basis at different health complexes in the district were demanding outstanding salaries 

Police charged baton and dispersed a group of heath workers who were demonstrating for their outstanding salaries in front of the Civil Surgeon's office in Sunamganj on Sunday afternoon.

Around 234 health workers, who work on a contract basis at different health complexes in the district were demanding outstanding salaries of last 12 months.

However, as soon as they gathered in front of the office, police charged baton to disperse the demonstrators and detained at least 7 heath workers from the scene.

Md Joynal Abedin, additional superintendent (Sadar circle) of Sunamganj district police said some health workers were trying to create instability, taking advantage of the demonstration.

"That's why, police intervened and brought the situation under control." added Joynal Abedin

Rahela Begum, a health worker of Sadar hospital said: "The health workers have been living a miserable lives amid Covid-19 crisis as they are being deprived of their salaries for 12 months."

"We went there to inform  the civil surgeon about the salary related issue," she added.

Speaking on the issue, Sunamganj Civil Surgeon Dr Shams Uddin, said: "Authorities have sent required papers to the related department so that the contractual health workers can get their dues soon."
