DU student Sumaiya murder: Husband, father-in-law remanded for 3 days

Sumaiya's husband Mostak Hossain and father-in-law Zakir Hossain were arrested on Thursday

The two prime accused in the Dhaka University student Sumaiya Khatun murder case was put on remand for three days in Natore. 

Natore Senior Judicial Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order on Friday after police produced Sumaiya's husband Mostak Hossain and father-in-law Zakir Hossain before the court.

Inspector Abdul Matin, the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said: "We produced Mostak and Zakir before the court with a seven-day remand prayer."

"The court granted three and also rejected the bail prayers of both accused," he added.

Earlier, on Thursday, Mostak was arrested from Bogra’s Nandigram upazila, while his father Jakir Hossain was arrested from Rajshahi’s Bagha upazila.

Sumaiya Khatun, who completed her BA and MA from the  Islamic Studies department, was tortured to death by her in-laws on Monday as she wanted to join the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS), ), said Sumaiya's  mother Nuzhat Sultana.

"My daughter was left dead at Natore Sadar Hospital," she added.

Following the incident, Nuzhat Sultana filed a case with Natore Sadar police station on Monday night, accusing four members of her in-law's family. 

The accused are Sumaiya's husband Mostak Hossain, her father-in-law Jakir Hossain, mother-in-law Syeda Maleka Akhtar, and sister-in-law Jakia Yasmin Juthi.

 Syeda Maleka Akhtar and Jakia Yasmin Juthi, are currently in custody.

Police have also made remand prayers for the two and a court will issue an order after hearing the remand application next Sunday.
