A Bangladeshi youth was shot dead by members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) near Dhanyakhola border under Benapole police station in Jessore on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Riazul Islam, 25, son of Abdur Jabbar of Bahadurpur.

Dhanyakhola BGB Camp Commander Subedar Sarwar Hossain confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said: "Locals confirmed that Riazul was a drug dealer and often trespassed into Indian territory to bring back contraband drugs."

"Riazul was presumably shot by a BSF patrol team in India on Friday morning when he was caught trying to bring back contraband drugs into Bangladesh and his body was later dumped on the Bangladesh side of the Dhanyakhola border," added the BGB official.

Some locals while heading to work at the fields in the morning spotted the dead body and immediately informed Dhanyakhola BGB Camp.

Benapole Port police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mamun Khan said: “After being informed by BGB, police recovered the dead body and sent it for an autopsy at Jessore General Hospital.”

Police will investigate the murder of the young man, he added.
