Update : 08 Jul 2020, 08:11 PM

Police on Tuesday afternoon recovered a barrel containing the skeleton of Kamal Ahmed, 42, a shop owner who went missing a year ago in Sylhet’s Beanibazar.

Meanwhile, three men have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder. Of them, the court has remanded two to police for further interrogation, while the other has already provided his confessional statement.

The arrestees identified as Amir Ali, a shop assistant in Zakiganj upazila, Helal Ahmad, and Shahidur Rahman, both traders by profession, were produced before a court on Wednesday.

The court denied a bail petition filed for their release and sent them to jail. The court also granted a two-day remand prayer filed by the police for interrogating Helal Ahmad and Shahidur Rahman.

Meanwhile, Amir Ali recorded his confessional statement under section 164 Code of Criminal Procedure.

Beanibazar police station Inspector and Case Investigation Officer Md Jahidul Haque confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said the murder is assumed to have taken place in order to silence Kamal Ahmed after Amir, Helal, and Shahidur along with others stole goods from his (Kamal) store.

Kamal was killed with local weapons and stuffed inside a barrel before it was dumped in a local waterbody in Charkhai of Beanibazar on July 5.

Police are trying to arrest the remaining suspects named in the murder case filed by the victim’s brother Jalal Ahmed, he added.
